  • If Our Sienna Tiles Could Speak

If the weathered sienna tiles of our beloved school could speak, they would recount the historic day when the cornerstone was laid by the pioneering Maryknoll Sisters, who crossed oceans to answer a calling. They would murmur of how these courageous women lived their mission to make love visible through action—building not just classrooms, but a sanctuary of hope when Hong Kong’s girls needed it most. The tiles would chime in about the generations of Maryknoll girls who walked these halls with curiosity in their hearts and purpose in their steps. They would whisper of quiet moments of discovery in sunlit classrooms, laughter echoing through the courtyard, and the enduring values that have shaped young women for more than a century.

As I roam the hallways with my students each day, I feel the weight of this legacy in every corner of our campus. The same tranquility that has steadied countless students over the decades settles my own spirit, reminding me that Maryknoll is more than a school—it is a haven of inspiration where girls grow into women of character, compassion, and conviction.

Now, as we emerge from our centenary celebrations, we stand at a pivotal moment. The tiles that bore witness to a century of transformation now ask: How will we prepare today’s learners for a world changing at breathtaking speed? Together, we have developed a three-year plan aimed at building a future-ready school under the theme: Vibrant Learners, Glowing Future.

True to our heritage, we will cultivate not only academic excellence but also the timeless virtues that have always defined a Maryknoll education. Our motto, Sola Nobilitas Virtus, calls us to measure success not by external rewards, but by the strength of character we nurture. In classrooms buzzing with inquiry, on courtyards alive with teamwork, and through service projects that extend our care beyond these walls, we will empower each student to become her best self—for her own growth and for the good of all. “To Home, To Country, To the World”—we sing this line with our hearts, etching it into our souls.

The wisdom within these walls reminds us that the best education is both grounding and transformative. As we chart our course forward, we honor the pioneering spirit of the Maryknoll Sisters by embracing innovation while holding fast to our core values. We will equip students with the skills to navigate an uncertain future—and the moral compass to do so with integrity.

If these tiles could speak, they would tell us the Maryknoll story is far from complete. In God’s grace, with gratitude for the past and faith in the future, we write the next chapter together—one in which every student discovers her voice, purpose, and power to illuminate the world.
